Short description
Summer, St. Petersburg of the XXI century. Student Rodion Raskolnikov is exhausted by lack of money, unemployment and thoughts about the meaninglessness of his existence. But the idea is maturing in his mind that some people have the "right" to do the most vile things if they make great discoveries and move the world forward. To test the theory on himself, he kills an old woman-a micro-lender. Investigator Porfiry Petrovich is on the trail of Raskolnikov, who wants to get a sincere confession from him.

What's left behind the scenes
- To film the scene of the old pawnbroker's murder, the cinematographer drew inspiration from a trick used in the movie 'La Haine'. Matvey Stavitsky attempted to replicate the camera sweep as performed by cinematographer Pierre Aim in the scene where Vincent Cassel stands before a bathroom sink.
- Work on the series took about five years. The idea to adapt 'Crime and Punishment' came to Vladimir Mirzoev before the pandemic, while he was working on the series 'Topy' in Minsk.
- The character named Shadow does not exist in the novel 'Crime and Punishment'. This character migrated into the series' script from another Dostoevsky novel, 'The Brothers Karamazov'. Ivan Karamazov's alter ego became Raskolnikov's alter ego.
- Actress Viktoria Tolstoganova, who played Sonya Marmeladova's stepmother, is terrified of rats. In the scene where her character looks at the rodents on the table in her apartment with horror, Tolstoganova isn't acting—she was genuinely frightened. In reality, the animals were specially trained for filming and could not cause any harm.
- The creators of the series considered only Ivan Yankovsky for the role of Rodion Raskolnikov.
- Initially, Arkady Svidrigailov was to be played by Vladimir Mishukov, but Mirzoev quickly saw in Mishukov the ideal Porfiry; consequently, Vladislav Abashin, whom the director had met while working on the series 'Inside the Killer,' was cast as Svidrigailov.
- During the filming of the old pawnbroker's murder, actor Ivan Yankovsky and makeup artist Aksinya Kozlova got so carried away that they splattered fake blood all over the equipment.
- Ivan Yankovsky tried not to break character as Rodion Raskolnikov and even asked his colleagues on set to call him Rodey.
- The production designers' task was to make the time period in the series ambiguous, avoiding clear references to either Dostoevsky's historical era or the present day. To achieve this, costume details were gathered from various eras, alternating modern elements with historical ones. The same approach was applied to the furniture.
- The entrance to the building where the pawnbroker lives and her apartment are two different locations in different cities. The scenes in these locations were filmed several months apart.
- The equipment used by cinematographer Matvey Stavitsky is over 100 years old. He sourced rare vintage lenses specifically for the series.
- To give the streets of St. Petersburg an oppressive atmosphere on screen, cinematographer Matvey Stavitsky and the lighting designer applied an amber filter to the street lamps during color grading. Meanwhile, the primary color accents in the series are built on the polarity of red and blue hues.
