What's left behind the scenes
- Melissa Benoist later recalled that, like her character, she initially felt out of place, but over time, relationships improved. Every day, the actors in the series would go swimming together and have dinner together in the evenings.
- Melissa Benoist (who played Bree) prepared for her role as a character recovering from drug addiction by reading Leslie Jamison's 1918 book, 'The Recovering: Intoxication and Its Aftermath.' Additionally, she had encountered drug addiction within her own family.
- A loose adaptation of screenwriter Kevin Williamson's coming-of-age story in North Carolina. In 1983, his father, a fisherman, was arrested on drug smuggling charges. According to Williamson, his father broke the law for the sake of his family because the state's fishing industry was literally 'dying' at the time.
