Short description

Cuban Bandleader Ricky Ricardo would be happy if his wife Lucy would just be a housewife. Instead she tries constantly to perform at the Tropicana where he works, and make life comically frantic in the apartment building they share with landlords Fred and Ethel Mertz, who also happen to be their best friends.

What's left behind the scenes

  • It is known that William Frawley (1887-1966) struggled with alcohol. At the start of his work on the series, he was sternly warned: stop drinking, or he would be fired. Consequently, in most of his scenes, Frawley's character keeps his hands in his pockets so that viewers would not notice his tremors.
  • This was one of the first series filmed in Hollywood, during a period when much was still filmed in New York. It was here that the three-camera simultaneous filming technique was first used.
  • In reality, William Frawley and Vivian Vance (1909-1979) couldn't stand each other. All the warm feelings they displayed on screen were acted. The series lasted for six seasons only because both actors were paid well.
  • Lucille Ball (1911-1989) decided to accept the offer to star in this series after dreaming of Carole Lombard (1908-1942, an actress primarily known for her roles in screwball comedies and a friend of Ball, who died in a plane crash), who recommended that she leave radio and try her luck in a television project.
