Short description

Falling Skies opens in the chaotic aftermath of an alien attack that has left most of the world completely incapacitated. In the six months since the initial invasion, the few survivors have banded together outside major cities to begin the difficult task of fighting back. Each day is a test of survival as citizen soldiers work to protect the people in their care while also engaging in an insurgency campaign against the occupying alien force.

What's left behind the scenes

The project "Falling Skies" was originally intended to be titled "Concord." It was under this name that executive producer Steven Spielberg and series creator Robert Rodat filmed the show, which aired in the US on the TNT channel. This would have been a reference to the Battles of Lexington and Concord—the first armed conflicts of the American Revolutionary War, which took place on April 19, 1775, in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Spielberg suggested changing the name, feeling that "Falling Skies" was more appropriate for a post-apocalyptic setting.
The name of the main Resistance group mentioned in the series—the 2nd Massachusetts Regiment—is a reference to a real regiment of the same name that fought in both the American Revolution and the Civil War.
