What's left behind the scenes
- The series' plot is based on the play 'King Lear' (1605-1606) by William Shakespeare (1564-1616).
- The scene in the pilot episode where Lucius throws Jamal into a trash can is based on real life. Once during childhood, the series creator and executive producer Lee Daniels' father did the same to him.
- The series is set in New York, although it was filmed in Chicago.
- The character of one of the show's protagonists, Ellie Dallas, is based on Whitney Houston (1963-2012), although Lee Daniels originally created the role for Courtney Love, of whom he is a devoted fan.
