What's left behind the scenes

  • This series features Helen Slater, who played the lead role in Jeannot Szwarc's film Supergirl (1984), and Dean Cain, who played Superman in the television series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993-1997), starring together as Supergirl's adoptive parents. Slater and Cain had previously worked together on the television series Smallville (2001-2011), where Kara Zor-El, or Supergirl, was played by Laura Vandervoort.
  • Supergirl's costume was designed by Colleen Atwood, who developed costumes for the lead characters in the television series Arrow (2012) and The Flash (2014). She also designed the Superman costume for the unproduced film Superman Lives, which was intended to star Nicolas Cage.
  • At the end of 2014, reports emerged that the storyline of this CBS project could develop within the shared universe of two other superhero series—Arrow (2012) and The Flash (2014). These series aired on The CW, but CBS holds some of the rights to them. In February 2016, it was officially announced that Grant Gustin, as The Flash from the eponymous television project, would appear in the series Supergirl.
  • The process of casting the lead role was long and difficult. The announcement that Melissa Benoist had been cast in the role was made in January 2015. The actress had long been considered the most suitable candidate. Among the many other actresses who auditioned for the role were Claire Holt, Gemma Atkinson, and Elizabeth Lail.
  • The television series takes place in the fictional National City. DC Comics, the creator of Supergirl, was called National Comics for a period of time.
  • Kara's adoptive parents are named Jeremiah and Eliza Danvers in the film, and Fred and Edna in later comics. In the comics by Supergirl author Peter David, her parents were named Fred and Sylvia.
  • Actor Glenn Morshower, who plays General Sam Lane, appeared in Matthew Vaughn's film X-Men: First Class (2011) alongside Michael Ironside, who played General Lane in the series Smallville (2001-2011).
  • This is the second role for Chyler Leigh where her character's name is a derivative of 'Alexander'. In the series Grey's Anatomy (2005), she played Alexandra 'Lexie' Caroline Grey, and in Supergirl, she plays Alexandra 'Alex' Danvers.
  • Melissa Benoist appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show (2003) and received a gift from the host: clothes for her dogs tailored to look like Superman's costume.
  • If you remove the vowels from the name Kara, you get "Kr," the letter designation for her home planet, Krypton.
  • Melissa Benoist admitted that she incorporated traits of writer, film critic, and director Susan Sontag, as well as journalist and prominent feminist movement figure Gloria Steinem, into her character.
  • The television news in the series is read by radio and TV game show host Jay Jackson. In the series "Parks and Recreation" (2009-2015), he played the role of news anchor and journalist Perd Hapley.
  • In the television series, Kara, who was taken in by the Danvers family, took their surname but kept her own name. When she was adopted in the comics, she went by the name "Linda Lee Danvers."
  • The sound effect accompanying the main character's use of X-ray vision is taken from the television series "Smallville" (2001-2011).
  • In the pilot episode of the TV series, Superman is never referred to as Superman or Clark Kent. When referring to him, the description "my cousin" or the pronoun "he" is used.
  • One of the early episodes of the TV series mentions the destruction of Metropolis during Superman's battle with villains, which occurred in Zack Snyder's film "Man of Steel" (2013). Meanwhile, the film's prequel made it clear that Kara Zor-El did not exist in that universe.
  • Calista Flockhart played the role of Cat Grant in the TV series. When the actress starred in the series "Brothers & Sisters" (2006-2011), her character was named Kitty Walker. (This is a play on names—"cat" and "kitty"). In the episode "Under Pressure," which premiered on November 16, 2015, the villain hunting Cat mockingly says, "Come here, kitty kitty kitty..."
  • Cat repeatedly calls Kara "Kira." After the second episode, Kara stopped correcting her.
  • In the comics, Lucy Lane became Superwoman, whose suit generated a field that gave her Kryptonian superpowers. The storyline "Who is this Superwoman?" describes her encounter with Supergirl.
  • In the series 'Grey's Anatomy' (2005), Chyler Leigh played 'Lexie' Grey, the protagonist's sister, who dies in a plane crash. In this television series, she once again plays the protagonist's sister, but in the pilot episode, she is saved from dying in a plane crash.
  • In a scene from the pilot episode where Kara finds herself under a hail of bullets, she is wearing boots with red laces. The footwear is very similar to that worn by Linda Danvers, or Supergirl, a character created by Peter David after DC Comics management decided to remove Kara from their fictional Universe.
  • The live-action film debut of several DC Comics Universe characters: Dr. T.O. Morrow, the White Martians, Red Tornado, Cameron Chase, Indigo/Brainiac, and Bizarro Supergirl.
  • Laura Vandervoort plays Indigo, a DC Comics character who, as later revealed, is the supervillain Brainiac 8. In the series 'Smallville' (2001-2011), Vandervoort played Brainiac, who had assumed Kara's appearance.
  • The Martian Manhunter is friends with Jeremiah Danvers, who is the one entrusted with the protection of Kara and Alex. The series 'Smallville' (2001-2011) depicts the opposite situation: there, the Martian Manhunter is friends with Jor-El, and his task is to protect Kal-El (also known as Clark Kent) on Earth.
