What's left behind the scenes

  • It is believed that Tut died from complications caused by an open leg fracture sustained in an accident. MRI and mummy scans showed that the accident was by no means immediately fatal and occurred during Tut's lifetime. Coriander, which was used to treat fever in that era, was found in his tomb. A bone in one of Tut's feet was deformed, evidently due to genetic abnormalities, which likely caused a limp. Many walking canes were placed in his tomb, many of which showed signs of prolonged use. It is believed that Tut's accident happened when he fell from a chariot while hunting. His body had already been weakened by malaria. Most likely, dirt entered Tut's wound, and he never recovered from the infection following the fracture. It is also possible that the fall caused internal injuries, but it is impossible to confirm or deny this, as the internal organs were removed during mummification.
