What's left behind the scenes

  • Wagner Moura plays Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar. One of the actor's most famous roles is that of a captain in a special police operations battalion fighting drug traffickers in Rio de Janeiro in José Padilha's film Elite Squad (2007).
  • For his portrayal of Pablo Escobar, Wagner Moura became the second Brazilian actor to be nominated for a Golden Globe. The first was Fernanda Montenegro for her role in Walter Salles' dramatic film Central Station (1998).
  • In the final episode of the first season, at the 42nd minute, when Pablo Escobar's mother hands stacks of money to his wife, it is visible that the money is actually blank white paper.
  • What viewers mistake for Uzi submachine guns in the hands of the gangsters are not actually Uzis. They are 'Ekol ASI,' a sort of Uzi clone that fires blanks and is frequently used on film sets instead of real weapons.
  • Adriana Barraza was cast as Pablo Escobar's mother for four episodes, including the pilot, but for reasons unknown to the general public, she was replaced by Paulina García.
  • In one of the final episodes of the first season, a journalist and mistress of Pablo Escobar arrives at his house in a BMW 5 Series (E39). This BMW debuted in 1995, whereas Pablo died on December 2, 1993. In that scene, there are at least 3-4 years until his death.
  • In the eighth episode of the third season, the former leaders of Los Pepes, the Castaño brothers, help rescue the wife of the Cali Cartel's chief money laundering specialist from guerrillas. In reality, the elder Castaño, Fidel, survived Escobar by only one month (he was killed on January 6, 1994), while the events involving Cali unfold in 1995.
  • Maurice Comte played a hitman working for a Mexican drug cartel in the TV series 'Breaking Bad' (2008-2013). In the series 'Narcos', he plays a colonel who is trying to put an end to Escobar and the Medellín Cartel.
  • Wagner Moura and André Mattos starred together in José Padilha's film 'Elite Squad: The Enemy Within' (2010).
  • Christian Tappan, who played Kiko Moncada in the TV series, plays Gonzalo Gaviria, Pablo Escobar's cousin, in the film 'Pablo Escobar: Lord of Evil' (2012).
  • The TV series Narcos features many actors who also appeared in the series Pablo Escobar, The Drug Lord (2012). Here are the actors in the most prominent roles: Cristian Tappan (one of the Moncada brothers in Narcos and Gonzalo Gaviria in Pablo Escobar, The Drug Lord), Helena Mallarino (the journalist's mother and Ana de Cano), Aldemar Correa (the leader of the M-19 group and the younger Ochoa brother), and Juan Carlos Arango (General Arisa and El Mariachi).
  • The first episode shows Miami, Florida, against the skyline, but it is a modern-day version of the city rather than one from the late 1970s.
  • When meeting Fernando Duque, Pablo Escobar says: 'I am not rich. I am a poor man, but with money.' This is a quote from the famous writer Gabriel García Márquez (1927-2014).
  • Wagner Moura is Brazilian by birth, and his mother's native language is Portuguese. To play the role of Pablo Escobar, the actor had to learn Spanish. The Spanish-language song at the beginning of the series is performed by Brazilian singer Rodrigo Amarante.
  • Cinematographer Lula Carvalho worked with director José Padilha on both 'Elite Squad' films (2007 and 2010) and the film 'RoboCop' (2014).
  • In the 7th episode, during a meeting between Pablo, Primo Gustavo, and the lawyer, Pablo justifies the terrorist attacks he committed, repeating word for word the arguments used by Pablo Escobar in a phone conversation recorded by intelligence services. This recording subsequently appeared in several documentaries about the drug lord.
  • In the first episode, Steve Murphy is shown at a bowling alley, and a sticker with the abbreviation "USBC" can be seen on a pin, which stands for the "United States Bowling Congress." The series takes place in the 1970s, but the United States Bowling Congress was not founded until 2005.
