Short description

The Smeshariki are stylized rounded animals. Each of the nine characters has a unique personality and a range of interests with no negative characters among them. Plots are built not on the battle of opposing forces but on the unexpected situations the animated characters stumble upon in their interactions deemed similar to the ones that children may encounter in their everyday lives. Many of the topics foreground the guidance that friendship and community provide to the individual making his or her way in the world. Complex themes and specific cultural references place this cartoon firmly within the Russian tradition of animation. Much attention was devoted to the humor in the series, some of which has attracted adults as well.

What's left behind the scenes

  • According to Anna Malginova, one of the creators of the original idea, the prototypes for all the KikoRiki characters were residents of Ufa; for example, the image of poet Aidar Khusainov was used to create Losyash the scientist. Nyusha was originally conceived as a smart and good girl like Pippi Longstocking; she was meant to balance out the boys and be a friend to them first and foremost.
  • A special New Year's intro appeared in the 2010 New Year's episodes. Later, this intro began to be used for all New Year's episodes.
  • In September 2008, 99 episodes of the cartoon were adapted for broadcast on the American TV channel The CW under the title "KikOriki."
  • In the episode "Mystery of the Ancient Treasures," Krosh and Hedgehog find a diagram for a simple crystal radio receiver for amplitude-modulated radio waves, but there is an error in the diagram—a diode is missing, which should have been placed in series with the parallel-connected capacitor and headphones. Such a receiver also doesn't require power sources, so Hedgehog risked himself for nothing by trying to plug it into an electrical outlet.
  • The episode "Marathoner" is an allusion to the film "Forrest Gump": the flower falling to the ground in the cartoon resembles the feather swirling in the air at the beginning of the movie, Barash's running resembles Forrest Gump's running, and furthermore, the phrase Hedgehog says in his sleep, "Run, Barash, run!" refers to the famous "Run, Forrest, run!"
  • In the episode "Sandwich," the shower scene is an allusion to Alfred Hitchcock's film "Psycho."
  • In episode 129, when Mulentiy runs up to Hedgehog, three apples are visible in his basket; then Mulentiy takes one, and another apple can be seen at the bottom of the basket. In the next shot, there are only two apples in the basket, when there should be three.
