What's left behind the scenes

  • When Ted Lasso runs out of Rebecca's office, he hits his head on the doorframe. This moment was not in the script; Jason Sudeikis actually hit his head quite hard.
  • Jason Sudeikis first played the character of Ted Lasso in a series of NBC Sports commercials dedicated to the English Premier League.
  • The character Roy Kent is based on the Irish footballer and coach Roy Maurice Keane, who played in the Premier League from 1992 to 2006 for Nottingham Forest and Manchester United. Like Roy Kent, his real-life counterpart was the team captain and was known for his hot-tempered and aggressive nature both on and off the field.
  • The first two episodes were directed by Zach Braff, who happened to be in the UK by pure chance when filming began.
  • It was initially intended that Brett Goldstein, who plays Roy Kent, would be the screenwriter; however, he liked the role so much that he auditioned, sent the tape to producer Bill Lawrence, and ultimately landed the part.
  • Lead actor Jason Sudeikis later shared that his situation was quite similar to that of his character; when the project was greenlit, he was going through a separation from Olivia Wilde (in the series, Ted is divorcing his wife), so he also headed to the UK (where filming took place) to grieve and pull himself together.
  • According to Hannah Waddingham, the biscuits that Ted brought to her character (she played Rebecca) every morning tasted "absolutely disgusting." The props department admitted they had put very little effort into making them, as no one thought the actress would actually eat them. Waddingham joked that the look of feigned delight on her face upon seeing the biscuits was the "pinnacle of her acting career."
  • During the coronavirus restrictions in 2020, Jason Sudeikis, Brendan Hunt, Joe Kelly, and several other actors became hooked on FIFA Online. Even before the series premiered, they had formed their own football club and played as their on-screen characters. This is how the writers discovered that Billy Harris was well-acquainted with the work of Canadian rapper Drake, a detail they subsequently incorporated into the plot of the second season.
  • A significant portion of the scenes were filmed in Richmond Green park, which covers only 4.8 hectares but looks much more spacious. The charity event was also filmed there.
  • The series shows teenagers playing football in Richmond Green park. In reality, however, cricket is mostly played there.
  • Cristo Fernández (who played Dani Rojas) actually played football from the age of 15, but ended his career due to a knee injury, after which he became interested in cinema. Phil Dunster, who played Jamie Tartt, played rugby as a child, but at 15 he wasn't accepted into the London Irish club, and he realized that his physique (he was too slight) would not allow him to play for professional clubs.
  • The name of the character Mo Bambercatch is clearly a play on the name of actor Benedict Cumberbatch.
