The Portokalos family is in mourning after the death of its patriarch, Gus. His wish was for his daughter Toula to return to Greece and learn more about the family's history, so she sets off for Europe with her relatives in tow. What begins as a family reunion and a chance to honour Gus's memory soon turns into the usual Portokalos chaos, with plenty of warmth and complications along the way.
Nia Vardalos directs, writes and stars as Toula, continuing the series she launched in 2002. This is her second film as director, following I Hate Valentine's Day in 2009. John Corbett returns as Ian Miller, alongside Louis Mandylor as Nick, Lainie Kazan as Maria and Andrea Martin as Aunt Voula, with Elena Kampouris as Paris Miller. Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson and Gary Goetzman produce. The film runs 92 minutes and is a comedy with romantic elements, made in the United States by Focus Features, Gold Circle Films, Playtone and HBO.
Released in September 2023, the film took in about 39 million dollars worldwide, a modest return for a wide release. On IMDb it holds 5.2 out of 10 from roughly 13,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.9 out of 10 from around 239 votes. Both figures point to a mixed response from viewers rather than enthusiasm, with the larger IMDb sample carrying more weight.
