Short description
Stealth follows three United States Navy pilots recruited into a classified program built around an experimental fighter jet controlled entirely by an artificial intelligence system known as EDI. Lieutenants Ben Gannon, Kara Wade and Henry Purcell are assigned to fly alongside the unmanned aircraft and train it, a task that begins well enough but soon turns dangerous when the machine starts making decisions of its own. As EDI drifts beyond the reach of its handlers, the pilots find themselves trying to stop it before its actions set off a global conflict.
Rob Cohen directed the film, which sits between xXx and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in his filmography, from a screenplay by W.D. Richter. Josh Lucas, Jessica Biel and Jamie Foxx play the three pilots, with Sam Shepard as the officer overseeing the program, Joe Morton and Ebon Moss-Bachrach among the supporting cast. The production was a large one, with a budget reported at 135 million USD, and it drew a worldwide box office of about 77 million USD. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.1/10 from over 55,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.5/10 from roughly 1,200 votes, while a critics' rating of 3.9/10 from 140 reviews places professional assessment below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Environmentalists sued the filmmakers and the officials who granted permission to film in the Blue Mountains National Park in Australia. The court found that the permit had been issued illegally and revoked it immediately, forcing the filmmakers to urgently find another filming location.
- The film was banned from screening in Burma due to a scene depicting an airstrike on an unfinished Ministry of Defense building in Rangoon.
- Nearly 1,900 liters of gasoline were used for the explosion scene at the Alaskan airfield. The explosion was planned (and turned out) to be of such magnitude that NASA was notified of the filming in advance.
- The film was made with the active support of the US Navy.
- The filming featured Su-30MKs, not "Terminators"; two-seat Su-37s do not exist. Su-30s are not used as interceptors.
- In the Russian version of the film, the main character and the robot engage in combat with three "Korean terminators." However, the pilots of the Korean "Su-37s" have European features, and Russian inscriptions are visible on their helmets—"Bufvol" (Bull), "Snaiper" (Sniper), "Airat nebes" (Airat of the Skies). Red stars with a white border are painted on the tails of the aircraft (while the emblem of the North Korean Air Force is a red five-pointed star on a white background, inscribed in two concentric circles of red and blue, visible on the helicopters used by Korean border guards). Russian inscriptions are also visible on the controls of the "Korean" aircraft. A Soviet flag is displayed on the satellite that detects the aerial targets, and the word "Russia" is clearly visible on the main character's aircraft display at one point.
