Short description

John Oldman is a university professor who is moving away from his position, and his colleagues gather at his home to see him off. As they help him pack and talk, the conversation turns toward the collection of artifacts in the house, and Oldman makes a claim that unsettles everyone present: that he has been alive for around 14,000 years, that he is a prehistoric man who has never aged, and that he has moved on every decade or so to keep anyone from noticing. His friends, most of them academics, challenge the assertion from their own fields of expertise, and the evening becomes a long debate about history, science and belief. The film takes place almost entirely in and around one house and rests on dialogue rather than action or effects.

Richard Schenkman directed this 2007 American drama from a screenplay by Jerome Bixby, with Schenkman producing alongside Eric D. Wilkinson. It is the first entry in a series that continued with a later film, and it precedes Schenkman's other features in his filmography. David Lee Smith plays John Oldman, and the cast includes Tony Todd, John Billingsley, Ellen Crawford, Annika Peterson and Alexis Thorpe.

The film runs 87 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.8 from about 218,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.6 from roughly 3,000 votes, showing a widely seen film with a consistently positive audience response. A film critics' rating of 8.3 from five reviews is notably higher than both audience scores, though the small number of reviews limits how much weight that comparison can carry.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film gained popularity because it was filmed by pirates and released online. After that, the film's producer wrote a thank-you letter to the ReleaseLog website where the film was published.
  • The character Tony Todd says: "I'm going home to watch Star Trek. At least a little bit of something intelligent." The film's screenwriter, Jerome Bixby, previously worked on the script for the original Star Trek series (1966-1969).
