Short description
Elizabeth, a gallery assistant in New York, meets John, a Wall Street broker, and the two begin an affair built almost entirely around sex. He draws her into increasingly elaborate erotic games while revealing little about his own life, and the imbalance between them gradually unsettles her, even as she finds it hard to break away.
Adrian Lyne directed the film, which followed his Foxes and Flashdance and preceded Fatal Attraction, Jacob's Ladder, Indecent Proposal, Lolita, Unfaithful and Deep Water. The screenplay was written by Sarah Kernochan, Zalman King and Patricia Louisianna Knop, with King also producing alongside Mark Damon and Sidney Kimmel. Mickey Rourke plays John and Kim Basinger plays Elizabeth, with Margaret Whitton, David Margulies, Christine Baranski and Karen Young in supporting roles. It runs 117 minutes.
Made for a reported 17 million dollars, the film took in roughly 7 million worldwide, a poor return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 5.9 out of 10 from over 43,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.1 from a much smaller pool of about 1,100. A critics' score of 5.7 from 25 reviews places it close to the audience ratings, with neither group rating it highly.
What's left behind the scenes
- To get Kim Basinger to perform the role as he envisioned it, director Adrian Lyne employed tactics of emotional manipulation, which Basinger later sharply criticized. For example, Lyne forbade Basinger and Mickey Rourke from communicating with each other off-set. They were kept apart, and Lyne would relay rumors about Rourke to Basinger so that she would demonstrate her feelings towards him on set. Furthermore, Rourke received notes with directions from Lyne, while Basinger received nothing, which also got under her skin.
- In the erotic scenes, body doubles were used instead of Kim Basinger.
- Kim Basinger became the owner of over 14 hours of footage that MGM believed could cause psychological trauma to viewers. These materials have never been shown anywhere, and are not even included in the director's cut released on DVD.
- Demi Moore auditioned for the lead role, but Adrian Lyne decided that at 21, she was unlikely to be convincing as a divorced gallery employee.
- The film is based on the novel of the same name and quite accurately conveys the content of the original source, although it is presented with a strong emphasis on eroticism and emotionally difficult moments.
