Short description

Colors is a crime drama set in Los Angeles, where street gangs divide territory and identity by the colors their members wear. Bob Hodges, a veteran officer with years of experience, is paired with Danny McGavin, a young and aggressive newcomer, in the police unit known as CRASH, which is tasked with curbing gang activity. The two men approach the job very differently: Hodges favors patience and dialogue, while McGavin pursues arrests relentlessly, and their friction grows as they patrol neighborhoods where hostility toward police is routine. McGavin also becomes involved with Louisa Gomez, a woman connected to the gang world, complicating his position further.

Dennis Hopper directed the film, which followed Easy Rider, The Hot Spot, Catchfire and Chasers in his filmography and was written by Michael Schiffer. Sean Penn plays McGavin and Robert Duvall plays Hodges, with María Conchita Alonso, Randy Brooks, Grand L. Bush and Don Cheadle among the credited cast of eighty. Made for about six million dollars and released in April 1988, it returned roughly forty-seven million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.7 from more than twenty-nine thousand votes, on TMDB 6.5 from a much smaller sample, alongside a critics' rating of 6.6 from thirty-nine reviews, placing audience and critical responses in similar territory.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The original screenplay written by Richard DiLello was set in Chicago and focused more on drug dealers than street gang members. Director Dennis Hopper ordered changes to the script, so screenwriter Michael Shiffer was hired; the setting was moved to Los Angeles, and the narrative focus was shifted to street gangs.
  • Producer Robert H. Solo hired members of actual street gangs as security and actors, and two of those hired were shot dead during filming.
  • On April 2, 1987, Sean Penn was arrested for assaulting an extra on set because the extra was filming the actor without his permission. Penn spent 33 days behind bars.
  • Critics complained about the unrealistic nature—in their view—of the scene in which a shootout between rival street gangs interrupts a funeral. According to the filmmakers, shortly after this scene was filmed, a church service for the deceased was actually disrupted by a shootout between criminals.
