What's left behind the scenes

  • Originally, Mel Gibson was slated to star in the lead role, and the film was intended to be an adventure drama. However, after Eddie Murphy signed on, the script was reworked to include comedic scenes and dialogue.
  • Initially, producers offered the director's position to John Carpenter.
  • The film was mainly shot in Los Angeles, with some location shooting in Nepal.
  • The role of the Golden Child – a Tibetan boy – was played by J. L. Reate.
  • John Barry composed the music for the film, but after disagreements with the producers, he left the project, and Michel Colombier was commissioned to write the music. However, several tracks written by Barry are still featured in the film.
