Ben Stein is the only member of the sequel's cast who appeared in Chuck Russell's original film, *The Mask* (1994).
Otis was played by two dogs, each trained in different tricks. Their fur had to be dyed to make the difference unnoticeable.
Jim Carrey was approached with a proposal to reprise his role as Stanley Ipkiss, that is, "The Mask," and the actor agreed. However, after reading the script, he declined the role, deciding that the project was doomed to fail.
Director Chuck Russell, who directed the original film, was asked to direct the film, but he refused when it became clear that Jim Carrey would not be involved.
