Son of the Mask
Short description
Son of the Mask follows Tim Avery, a cartoonist who is not yet ready for fatherhood and whose life is upended when his dog brings home the mask of Loki. The mask grants its wearer the power to change shape at will, and when Tim's baby son comes into contact with it, the child inherits those abilities. Tim must adjust to raising an infant with extraordinary powers while the mask's original owner, the Norse god Loki, sets out to reclaim what is his.
The film is the second feature directed by Lawrence Guterman, following Cats & Dogs in 2001, and was written by Lance Khazei. Jamie Kennedy plays Tim, with Alan Cumming as Loki, Traylor Howard as Tonya Avery, Kal Penn as Jorge, and Steven Wright and Ben Stein in supporting roles. It was produced by New Line Cinema, Working Title Films, Radar Pictures and Dark Horse Entertainment, with a budget of 84 million US dollars and a worldwide box office of about 60 million.
Son of the Mask is a follow-up to the 1994 film The Mask, though it centres on a new family rather than the earlier characters. Reception has been poor across measures: on IMDb the rating is 2.3 out of 10 from around 62,000 votes, and on TMDB it is 4.2 out of 10 from roughly 2,000 votes. A critics' rating of 3 out of 10 from 102 reviews places professional assessment below even the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Otis was played by two dogs, each trained in different tricks. Their fur had to be dyed to make the difference unnoticeable.
- Director Chuck Russell, who directed the original film, was asked to direct the film, but he refused when it became clear that Jim Carrey would not be involved.
- Ben Stein is the only member of the sequel's cast who appeared in Chuck Russell's original film "The Mask" (1994).
- Jim Carrey was offered the opportunity to reprise his role as Stanley Ipkiss, that is, "The Mask," and the actor agreed. However, after reading the script, he declined the role, deciding that the project was doomed to fail.
