A Simple Plan
Short description
In a snowy Minnesota forest, two brothers and a friend come across the wreck of a small plane, the pilot's body inside and a bag holding more than four million dollars. Hank Mitchell has a steady job, a wife expecting their first child, and the least reason to look suspicious; his brother Jacob and Jacob's friend Lou have neither work nor much else. The three agree to keep the money and wait before spending any of it, but the secret soon turns them against one another as suspicion and fear take hold.
Sam Raimi directed the film, the seventh of the seventeen features he has made in chronological order, following The Quick and the Dead and preceding For Love of the Game. Scott B. Smith wrote the screenplay. Bill Paxton plays Hank, Billy Bob Thornton plays Jacob, Bridget Fonda plays Hank's wife Sarah, and Brent Briscoe plays Lou.
The production, made for around 17 million dollars, returned roughly 16 million at the worldwide box office. Audiences rate it 7.5/10 on IMDb from more than 74,000 votes and 7.2/10 on TMDB, while a critics' rating stands at 8.2/10 from 72 reviews, a higher figure than either audience score.

- In January 1998, while Northwest Airlines was transporting footage from Minnesota to Los Angeles, a scene featuring Billy Bob Thornton and Bill Paxton was lost. The missing scene had been filmed in Minnesota. The film was insured, so the scene was simply reshot.

As it turned out, John Paxton had written director Sam Raimi a letter expressing admiration for his work and asking if there was a small role for him in any film. Raimi called Paxton Sr. for an audition and cast him as Mr. Schmidt.
- The scenes in the bar were filmed in the town of Delano, Minnesota. It was an old establishment converted into private housing, which had to be used for filming because the town's only real bar was unsuitable for shooting for a number of reasons.
