Chris Carver is set on finally winning his street's yearly Christmas decorating contest. When a mischievous elf named Pepper offers her help, Chris takes the deal, not realizing what it will unleash. Pepper's spell brings the figures of the song "The Twelve Days of Christmas" to life, and the resulting chaos spreads through the whole town. With the holiday at risk for his family and everyone else, Chris, his wife Carol and their three children must find a way to undo Pepper's magic, racing against time against the strange creatures now loose in their neighborhood.
Eddie Murphy stars as Chris, with Tracee Ellis Ross as Carol and Jillian Bell as Pepper; the children are played by Genneya Walton, Thaddeus J. Mixson and Madison Thomas. Reginald Hudlin directed the film, which Kelly Younger wrote, and Brian Grazer, Murphy and Karen Lunder produced it. It is a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Imagine Entertainment, Eddie Murphy Productions and Amazon MGM Studios release. The film runs 117 minutes and combines comedy, family and fantasy, arriving in the same year as Hudlin's Sidney among the features he has directed.
Audience scores put the film around the middle: on IMDb it holds 5.6 out of 10 from roughly 23,000 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 6 out of 10 from a much smaller sample of about 515 votes. A critics' rating of 5.4 out of 10 from 71 reviews places reviewers slightly below the IMDb audience, so the film drew a broadly lukewarm response across both groups.
