Short description

Funny Games follows a wealthy Austrian family arriving at their lakeside holiday home for the summer. Anna, her husband Georg and their young son Georgie have barely settled in when a polite young man named Peter appears at the door, asking to borrow eggs for the neighbours. His manner is courteous, but his arrival is unsettling, and he is soon joined by a second young man, Paul. The two intruders take the family hostage and subject them to a series of cruel games, turning the holiday into a drawn-out ordeal.

Michael Haneke wrote and directed the film, the fifth of the fourteen features he has directed in chronological order, following 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance and preceding The Castle. Susanne Lothar and Ulrich Mühe play Anna and Georg, with Arno Frisch as Paul, Frank Giering as Peter and Stefan Clapczynski as Georgie. Veit Heiduschka produced the film, which was made in Austria and runs 109 minutes.

The film holds a rating of 7.5 from around 96,000 votes on IMDb and 7.3 from roughly 2,200 votes on TMDB. A critics' rating of 7.4 from 40 reviews sits close to those audience scores, indicating a generally favourable reception across both groups.

What's left behind the scenes

  • During the premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, special red stickers were placed on the tickets warning the audience that they were in for something truly terrifying.
  • According to Michael Haneke, he initially planned to write a short essay about violence in the media, and this idea then prompted him to create a feature film.
  • In the scene when the criminals leave for the first time, viewers see a single shot (without editing) lasting over 10 minutes.
  • Paul utters the phrase "we haven't even reached the standard length of a feature film" exactly at the 90th minute of the movie.
  • Ulrich Mühe and Susanne Lothar, who played a married couple in "Funny Games", were married in real life.
