Short description
During the Tang dynasty, a general betrays the emperor and seizes power in the East Capital. After the general kills his father, a young man seeks refuge at the Shaolin Temple. There, he trains in kung fu to gain the skills necessary to kill the traitor. As the conflict escalates, the monks of the temple join the fight to defeat the usurper and restore the rightful emperor.
Directed by Cheung Sing-Yim, this action film was the first in a chronological sequence of his work that included Kids from Shaolin in 1984. The production was a collaboration between Hong Kong and China, produced by Chung Yuen Motion Picture Co. with a screenplay by Sit Hau and Lo Siu-Cheung. The movie features Jet Li in the lead role as Gong Yuen, alongside Hai Yu, Yu Chenghui, Ding Lan, Hu Jian-Qiang, and Sun Jiankui, with a total of 28 credited cast members.
The film earned 16 million USD at the worldwide box office. It has been received positively by viewers, holding a rating of 6.8/10 on IMDb based on 5,100 votes and a 7/10 on TMDB from 146 votes.

- The film was shot in Hunan Province in a real Buddhist temple.
- Although the Shaolin Monastery actually exists, the level of proficiency in martial arts of its monks is greatly exaggerated.
- In 1989, the film and its sequels were shown on Soviet television in segments of 15 minutes each as part of the television almanac "Around the World" (an appendix to the "Travel Club" program). The film became a cult favorite among young people and spurred a growing interest in Eastern martial arts in the USSR.
