The Family Plan
Short description
Dan Morgan has built a quiet life as a suburban husband and father and a successful car salesman. What his wife and children do not know is that he once worked as a hired killer. When figures from that old life resurface, Dan has no choice but to bundle his unsuspecting family into the car and set off on a road trip that becomes a fight to stay alive. The screenplay is by David Coggeshall.
The film is directed by Simon Cellan Jones, whose earlier feature was Coup! (2006). It came third in his filmography, ahead of Arthur the King (2024) and The Family Plan 2 (2025). Mark Wahlberg plays Dan and also produced alongside Dana Goldberg and Don Granger. Michelle Monaghan appears as Jessica Morgan, with Maggie Q as Gwen, Zoe Colletti and Van Crosby as the children Nina and Kyle, and Ciarán Hinds as McCaffrey. Around sixty performers are credited, with a crew of more than twice that number.
Released in December 2023 and running just under two hours, the film mixes action and comedy with family material. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.3 from roughly 63,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.2 from a far smaller group of about 2,000 voters. A critics' rating of 4.5 from 37 reviews sits well below both audience scores, suggesting reviewers were considerably less enthusiastic than viewers.
What's left behind the scenes
- Dan, played by Mark Wahlberg, sells cars. Wahlberg himself owns a network of car dealerships in Ohio. In the fight scene at the Las Vegas hotel, Wahlberg's character throws a bottle of tequila. This brand – Tequila Flecha Azul – actually exists and is owned by Wahlberg.
- In one scene, Kyle Morgan complains that his new name is not a name at all, but a car model. He is given the name Van, and that is also the real name of Van Crosby, who appears on screen in this role.
