Born American

Three young Americans on holiday in Finland cross the border into the Soviet Union one day, apparently for the adventure of it. Soviet border guards spot them and open fire, and the outing turns into a fight for survival. The Americans are captured and imprisoned, where interrogations and brutal treatment follow.

The film is a Finnish-American action drama directed by Renny Harlin, who wrote the screenplay with producer Markus Selin. It was Harlin's first feature as director, and the first of the twenty-eight films he has directed in chronological order, ahead of Prison the following year. Mike Norris plays Savoy, with Steve Durham as Mitch and David Coburn as K.C.; Thalmus Rasulala, Albert Salmi and Piita Vuosalmi are also among the twenty-three credited cast members. The film runs 97 minutes and was made for about 3 million dollars, a figure it matched at the worldwide box office. Audiences have rated it low, at 4.3 out of 10 on IMDb from around 2,400 votes and 4 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller number of votes.

Set largely in northern Finland and the Soviet border region, the film blends a wilderness adventure premise with the prison-thriller elements that drive its second half.
