Short description

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken follows a shy teenager trying to get through life at Oceanside High while feeling overlooked by her classmates. Her mother has one strict rule: stay away from the ocean. When Ruby breaks it, she learns that she belongs to a royal line of kraken warriors and that her grandmother rules as the Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas. The kraken have long guarded the oceans against the vain, power-hungry mermaids, and Ruby is expected to take up that inheritance. A popular new student, Chelsea, complicates matters by turning out to be a mermaid. Ruby must come to terms with who she is and act to protect the people she cares about.

The film is directed by Kirk DeMicco, whose earlier features are Space Chimps, The Croods and Vivo; it stands fourth among the five titles listed for him chronologically, ahead of Margie Claus. Pam Brady, Brian C. Brown and Elliott DiGuiseppi wrote the screenplay, Kelly Cooney Cilella produced, and the voice cast is led by Lana Condor as Ruby, with Toni Collette as her mother Agatha, Annie Murphy as Chelsea, Sam Richardson as Uncle Brill, Liza Koshy as Margo and Will Forte as Gordon Lighthouse. Thirty cast members and 152 crew members are credited.

Made by DreamWorks Animation with Universal Pictures and dentsu, the film cost about 70 million USD and took in roughly 46 million USD worldwide, less than its budget. On IMDb it holds 5.7 out of 10 from around 14,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.1 out of 10 from about 1,140 votes. Critics gave it 5.8 out of 10 across 104 reviews, close to the IMDb audience figure and below the TMDB one.
