Based on a true story, Sugar follows two young Canadian women who travel on a luxury cruise ship. While the trip initially seems like a dream, the women become entangled in a large-scale drug smuggling operation. As they navigate the journey, they find themselves trapped within a dangerous criminal network with no way to escape.
The crime drama was directed by Vic Sarin, who also co-wrote the screenplay alongside Ben Johnstone and Annelies Kavan. This production marks the second film in a sequence of three directed by Sarin, following A Mother's Nightmare and preceding The Lightkeeper. A cast of 30 credited actors appears in the film, featuring Katherine McNamara and Jasmine Sky Sarin in the lead roles, with supporting performances by Éric Bruneau, Anthony Timpano, Kwame Onwuachi, and Armand Assante.
A joint production between Canada and Mexico involving Sepia Films, Connect3 Media, and Kanan Films, the movie has a runtime of 101 minutes. Audience reception has been generally low, as indicated by the ratings. The film holds a 4.5/10 on IMDb based on 723 votes and a 4.7/10 on TMDB from 25 votes.
