Friday After Next
Short description
Craig and his cousin Day-Day have moved out of their parents' homes and into a place of their own, supporting themselves with night shifts as security guards at a local mall. On Christmas Eve, a burglar dressed as Santa Claus breaks in and takes their gifts along with the money they had set aside for rent. Facing eviction and a ruined holiday, the cousins set out to find the thief and get their money back.
Friday After Next is a comedy from 2002, written and produced by Ice Cube and directed by Marcus Raboy. It is the third entry in the Friday series and was the first feature Raboy directed, ahead of later television specials. Ice Cube returns as Craig, with Mike Epps as Day-Day, and John Witherspoon, Don Curry, Anna Maria Horsford, and Clifton Powell among the credited cast of 43.
Made for a budget of 20 million dollars, the film took in about 34 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.8 from roughly 33,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.4 from 479 votes. A critics' rating of 4.4 from 71 reviews places it below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film was initially intended to be titled 'The Last Friday,' but it was decided that this was too similar to the title of Adam Marcus’s horror film 'Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday' (1993), and also, they wanted to leave the possibility open for sequels.
- A significant portion of the wardrobe for the fictional store 'Pimps & Ho' in the film was created by Los Angeles fashion designer Mark Wachon, whose store on Melrose Avenue specialized in clubwear. Right next to his former store is 'Barbershop Club,' which inspired Ice Cube to film 'Barbershop' (Tim Story, 2002).
- Initially, the character of Roach, to be played by Justin Pierce (1975-2000), was written into the original script, but the script was rewritten after Pierce, a British actor and skateboarder, committed suicide approximately six months after the release of the previous film in the 'Next Friday' franchise (Steve Carr, 2000).
- Chris Tucker was asked to reprise his role in the third film of the franchise, but he declined. Less than an hour later, Mike Epps contacted the filmmakers and asked if he could play his character again.
