Veuve Clicquot is not just a champagne brand name, but a real woman, Barbe-Nicole Clicquot-Ponsardin. Widowed at a relatively young age, 27, she inherited her husband's entire business, including the wineries, and not only inherited it but transformed it into one of the most famous champagne brands in Europe.
Barbe-Nicole was a true innovator, but not the first woman to run a winery. And she did not come up with the brand name “Veuve Clicquot” at all. At that time, it was a traditional name for a winery managed by a widowed woman. Companies like “Veuve Laurent-Perrier,” “Veuve Chanoine,” and “Veuve Blanche” already existed. However, they handed over the business to experienced managers.
