Hana is a professional gamer whose acute agoraphobia keeps her at home, where she has built a career around streaming, tournaments and early access to new titles. When she is invited to take part in a major competition, she is sent an advanced device that promises to transform how she plays. It soon appears to have an unsettling effect on her mind, blurring the line between reality and what is happening inside her head. She is left unsure whether the equipment is reading her thoughts or controlling them.
Latency is a 2024 action, horror, science fiction and thriller film directed by James Croke, who also wrote the screenplay. It was produced by Barry Brooker, Scott Clayton and Jordan Gertner for Lionsgate, Grindstone Entertainment Group and Kaos Entertainment, and shot with backing from the United States and Thailand. Sasha Luss plays Hana, with Alexis Ren as Jen, Ava Caryofyllis, Robert Coleby, Kelly B. Jones and Willy Zogo in supporting roles.
The film runs 94 minutes. Its ratings sit in the lower range: on IMDb it holds 4.2 out of 10 from around 3,200 votes, and on TMDB 5.7 out of 10 from a much smaller sample of 83 votes. A critics' rating of 4.5 out of 10 from 18 reviews is close to the audience scores, suggesting broad agreement rather than a sharp divide between reviewers and viewers.
