Nurse Betty

Betty works as a waitress in a small Kansas town and escapes her unhappy marriage through a daytime soap opera, especially its handsome doctor, David Ravell. After she witnesses her husband's violent murder, the shock leaves her convinced that the life of the series is her own: she believes she is a nurse and Ravell's former fiancée. She sets off for Los Angeles to find him, unaware that neither the hospital nor the doctor exists. Meanwhile, the two killers who shot her husband are pursuing her, one of them increasingly obsessed with her. The film was directed by Neil LaBute, following his earlier features, and was written by John C. Richards and James Flamberg. Renée Zellweger plays Betty, with Morgan Freeman and Chris Rock as the hitmen, Greg Kinnear as the soap doctor, and Aaron Eckhart as her husband. The budget was 24 million dollars, and worldwide grosses reached about 29 million. On TMDB, the film holds a rating of 6.1 out of 10 from 441 votes. A comedy blended with crime, drama and thriller elements, it moves between the flat, ordinary Middle American town and the glossier world of television production and Los Angeles, where Betty's delusion collides with the people hunting her. It is the earliest of twelve films directed by LaBute, followed by Possession in 2002.
