Back to the Future centres on Marty McFly, a teenager in 1985 whose friendship with the eccentric inventor Doc Brown leads him to a time machine built into a car. When an unplanned trip sends him to 1955, Marty finds his future parents as teenagers who have not yet met, and his presence causes their first encounter to go wrong. He has to set their relationship back on course while finding a way home, and he turns to the younger version of Doc for help.
Robert Zemeckis directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Bob Gale; Bob Gale and Neil Canton produced it for Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment. It was Zemeckis's third film as director, following Romancing the Stone a year earlier. Michael J. Fox plays Marty, with Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown, Crispin Glover and Lea Thompson as his parents, Claudia Wells as Jennifer Parker and Thomas F. Wilson as Biff Tannen.
Released in July 1985, the film cost about 19 million dollars and took roughly 390 million dollars worldwide, a return that made it one of the most commercially successful releases of its year. Audiences rate it highly: 8.5 out of 10 on IMDb from 1.4 million votes and 8.3 out of 10 on TMDB from over 22,000 votes. A critics' rating of 9 out of 10 from 117 reviews puts it in line with those audience scores.
