Short description

In a near future where most of humanity has been wiped out, Paul lives with his twin sons, Thomas and Joseph, on a remote fortified farm. By day they manage to lead a relatively normal life, but after sunset they must defend themselves against violent, mysterious creatures that emerge in the darkness. When Thomas fails to return home before nightfall, Paul ventures beyond the safety of the farm to find him, and a brutal encounter leaves him badly injured. With their father incapacitated, the brothers must draw on everything he taught them in order to keep him alive.

Arcadian is a 2024 action, horror, science fiction and thriller film directed by Benjamin Brewer, his second feature after The Trust (2016). Michael Nilon wrote the screenplay, and the cast is led by Nicolas Cage as Paul, with Jaeden Martell as Joseph, Maxwell Jenkins as Thomas, Sadie Soverall as Charlotte, Samantha Coughlan as Mrs. Rose and Joel Gillman as Hobson. Cage is also credited as a producer, alongside Arianne Fraser and Braxton Pope. The production involved companies in Ireland and the United States, including Cage's Saturn Films.

The film runs 92 minutes and took about 1 million dollars worldwide, a small figure that places it at the modest end of the theatrical market for its genres. Ratings are middling across the board: on IMDb it holds 5.5 out of 10 from around 27,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.1 out of 10 from roughly 965 votes. A critics' rating of 6.4 out of 10 from 117 reviews is slightly higher than the audience scores, suggesting a mixed but not dismissive response from reviewers.

What's left behind the scenes

  • According to director Benjamin Brewer, the appearance of the monsters was inspired by Disney character Goofy.
  • Screenwriter Michael Nylon is an agent, manager, and partner of Nicolas Cage.
  • In preparation for the role, Nicolas Cage secluded himself with his family for three months.
