Outland
Short description
Outland is set on Io, a moon of Jupiter, where a mining company operates a colony built around extracting resources that have run out on Earth. Marshal William T. O'Niel arrives at the settlement and looks into a series of deaths among the workers, a task that brings him into conflict with the colony's management and their enforcers. As he and Dr. Lazarus investigate, they uncover what is driving the miners' erratic and violent behaviour, and O'Niel finds himself increasingly isolated as he refuses to drop the matter.
Peter Hyams wrote and directed the film, his third of seventeen features, arriving between Hanover Street and The Star Chamber. Sean Connery leads the cast as O'Niel, with Peter Boyle as Mark Sheppard, Frances Sternhagen as Dr. Lazarus, James B. Sikking, Kika Markham and Clarke Peters among the credited performers. The production, made through Warner Bros., The Ladd Company and Outland Productions with Richard A. Roth producing, cost about 18 million dollars and returned roughly 17 million worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.4 from around 730 votes, while critics gave it 5.8 from 28 reviews. Its blend of science fiction and western elements places a lawman's stand against a remote industrial outpost at the centre of the story.
