Short description

Plot under wraps. Known to feature a contemporary setting and said to be the directors most commercial project yet. Rumored to adapt Thomas Pynchon's "Vineland" but with a current day setting.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In an interview, Benicio del Toro stated that a scene in which his character returned to the martial arts school was cut during editing.
  • In a video released after the film's premiere, Leonardo DiCaprio and Benicio del Toro discussed what would happen to their characters after the events depicted in the film. DiCaprio suggested that his character would continue performing with the band. Del Toro stated that a scene where his character returned to martial arts school was cut during editing, meaning his confrontation with law enforcement ended successfully.
  • The car chase scenes at the end of the film were not included in the original script.
  • Director, screenwriter, and producer Paul Thomas Anderson began working on the script about 20 years ago, planning an action film with numerous car chases; he took frequent breaks but returned to the unfinished screenplay every 2-3 years. In the early 2000s, he planned to film an adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's novel "Vineland" (1990), set in the 1960s, which led him to reflect on how the novel's ideas could be reimagined several decades later. At the same time, he conceived the idea of a female revolutionary protagonist. Eventually, Anderson decided to abandon the idea of a literal adaptation of the novel, but he kept the elements that particularly touched him and supplemented them with his own reflections.
  • Filming took place from January 21st to July 30th, 2024. The shooting process had to be interrupted for two and a half months due to actor Benicio del Toro's work on the film 'The Phoenician Scheme' from March to June.
  • In one scene, Colonel Lockjoe runs his tongue over a comb before putting it to his hair. This is a reference to former US Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz, who prepared for television interviews in the exact same way, as revealed in the documentary "Fahrenheit 11/9".
