- The project was initially titled 'Lost Patrol'; its literary basis was the book by former American Army Lieutenant Colonel Harold G. Moore and reporter Joseph L. Galloway, 'We Were Soldiers Once…and Young'.
- Over 260 kilometers of film footage were shot for the film. The editing team needed 6 days to review the material.
- The film was banned from screening in Vietnam.
- Vietnamese actor Don Duong was accused of "treason" in his home country for his portrayal of a North Vietnamese lieutenant colonel in the film and was forced to emigrate to the United States.
