Short description

The year is 1965 and America is at war with North Vietnam. Commanding the air cavalry is Lt. Col. Hal Moore (Gibson), a born leader committed to his troops. His target: the Ia Drang Valley, called "The Valley of Death." As Moore prepares for one of the most violent battles in U.S. history, he delivers a stirring promise to his soldiers and their families: "I will leave no man behind...dead or alive. We will all come home together."

The project was initially titled 'Lost Patrol'; its literary basis was the book by former American Army Lieutenant Colonel Harold G. Moore and reporter Joseph L. Galloway, 'We Were Soldiers Once…and Young'.
Over 260 kilometers of film footage were shot for the film. The editing team needed 6 days to review the material.
The film was banned from screening in Vietnam.
Vietnamese actor Don Duong was accused of "treason" in his home country for his portrayal of a North Vietnamese lieutenant colonel in the film and was forced to emigrate to the United States.
