Barbershop takes place during a single day at a barbershop on Chicago's South Side, a neighborhood institution that has served for years as a gathering place. Calvin Palmer inherited the shop from his father, but he sees it mainly as a financial burden and a drain on his time, especially with bills to pay and a child on the way. He decides to sell the business to a local loan shark, who plans to turn the space into a strip club. As the day goes on and he spends time among the shop's regulars, Calvin begins to reconsider what his father built and what the shop means to the community. The story unfolds through the conversations and conflicts of an ensemble that includes Eddie, an opinionated older barber with few customers; Jimmy, a college student who works there; Isaac, a newly hired white barber eager for a chance to cut hair; Ricky, an ex-convict trying to rebuild his life; and Terri, who cannot bring herself to leave her unfaithful boyfriend.
The film was directed by Tim Story, the first of 15 features he has directed in chronological order, followed by Taxi in 2004. It was written by Mark Brown, Don D. Scott and Marshall Todd and produced by Brown, Robert Teitel and George Tillman Jr. Ice Cube leads the cast as Calvin, alongside Anthony Anderson, Cedric the Entertainer, Sean Patrick Thomas, Eve and Troy Garity, with 67 credited cast members in all. Made for a budget of 12 million USD, it took 77 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.4/10 from 36,000 votes and on TMDB 6.4/10 from 559 votes, while film critics gave it 6.7/10 from 123 reviews.
