What's left behind the scenes

  • The directorial debut of F. Gary Gray.
  • The film is set on a street in Los Angeles where director F. Gary Gray grew up. The film was shot in the homes of his old friends.
  • During filming, the cast and crew were instructed under no circumstances to wear red. The 126th Street, where filming took place, is located in territory controlled by a street gang whose members wore blue bandanas, while members of a rival gang wore red. For safety reasons, red was banned, as anyone wearing an item of red clothing (whether a bandana or something else) could be automatically suspected of sympathizing with the opposing group.
  • In a flashback showing Chris Tucker's character in a car with the character played by Demetrius Navarro and his friend, two men are visible in the background. These were locals who refused to cooperate with the film crew and move out of the shot, stating that they were at home and could do as they pleased.
