Short description
Craig has lost his job and faces being thrown out by his parents, so he spends Friday sitting on the porch of his South Central Los Angeles home with his friend Smokey. Smokey has been smoking the marijuana he was supposed to sell, leaving the pair owing a dealer two hundred dollars by the end of the day. Over the same afternoon and evening, Craig tries to avoid his jealous girlfriend Joi long enough to win over Debbie, a fitness trainer he is interested in, while steering clear of Deebo, a neighbourhood bully who takes what he wants from the people around him.
F. Gary Gray directed the film, his first feature, from a screenplay by Ice Cube and DJ Pooh. Ice Cube plays Craig, Chris Tucker plays Smokey, Nia Long plays Debbie, Tommy Lister Jr. plays Deebo, and John Witherspoon and Anna Maria Horsford play Craig's parents. Produced by Patricia Charbonnet, the film had a budget of four million dollars and took about twenty-eight million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb it holds 7.2 out of 10 from roughly 136,000 votes, and on TMDB it also holds 7.2 from a much smaller vote count. A critics' rating of 6.2 from thirty reviews is somewhat below those audience scores.

- During filming, the cast and crew were instructed under no circumstances to wear red. The 126th Street, where filming took place, is located in territory controlled by a street gang whose members wore blue bandanas, while members of a rival gang wore red. For safety reasons, red was banned, as anyone wearing an item of red clothing (whether a bandana or something else) could be automatically suspected of sympathizing with the opposing group.
