The Dead Pool

San Francisco detective Harry Callahan finds himself drawn into a case in which famous people are being killed one after another. A secret list of celebrities is circulating, and bets are being placed on which of them will die first. Harry's own name appears on that list, turning the investigator into a potential target. He works the case alongside his partner Al Quan, a young Chinese-American inspector, while a television reporter takes a personal interest in both the story and in Harry himself.

The film is the fifth entry in the Dirty Harry series starring Clint Eastwood, who returns as the title character. Patricia Clarkson plays reporter Samantha Walker, Liam Neeson appears as film director Peter Swan, and Jim Carrey has a role as rock musician Johnny Squares. Buddy Van Horn directed, working from a screenplay by Steve Sharon, Sandy Shaw and Duke Pearson, with David Valdes producing. It was Van Horn's second film as director, following Any Which Way You Can, and came five years before Pink Cadillac.

Produced by Warner Bros. Pictures with Eastwood's Malpaso Productions, the film was made for about 20 million dollars and took roughly 38 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.3 from over 48,000 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 6.3, from a much smaller base of voters. A critics' score of 5.4 from 34 reviews places it below both audience figures.
