Insiang

Set in a poor neighbourhood of Manila, Insiang follows a young woman who lives with her mother, Tonya. Their already difficult daily life in the slums changes when Tonya brings home Dado, her much younger lover, a local tough figure. Tension builds within the household as Dado turns his attention toward Insiang, and the situation becomes intolerable. Insiang's relationship with her boyfriend Bebot offers little relief, and those around her fail to help. Insiang eventually begins planning how to take revenge.

Lino Brocka directed the film, which was written by Lamberto E. Antonio and Mario O'Hara. It was released in December 1976 and runs 95 minutes. Brocka had made Manila in the Claws of Light the previous year, and Insiang was his next feature before Bona in 1984 and Macho Dancer in 1989, placing it early in his filmography. Hilda Koronel plays Insiang, with Mona Lisa as Tonya, Ruel Vernal as Dado and Rez Cortez as Bebot.

On IMDb, Insiang holds a rating of 7.5 out of 10 from around 2,400 votes. On TMDB it has a rating of 7 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes. A film critics' rating of 8.5 out of 10 comes from 11 reviews, indicating stronger approval from critics than the audience scores reflect.
