Scenes from a Marriage

Scenes from a Marriage follows Marianne, a lawyer, and Johan, a psychology professor, whose outwardly successful marriage comes apart. After a dinner with friends erupts into an argument between the guests, the couple begin to confront the distance between them. Johan then reveals an affair, and the two separate, divorce, and attempt to rebuild their lives with other partners, while remaining drawn back to each other over the years.

Ingmar Bergman wrote and directed the film, the nineteenth of the twenty-four features listed in his chronological filmography, arriving between Cries and Whispers and The Magic Flute. It was produced by Lars-Owe Carlberg through Cinematograph AB. Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson play Marianne and Johan, with Bibi Andersson, Jan Malmsjö, Gunnel Lindblom and Wenche Foss in supporting roles. The 169-minute theatrical version was cut down by Bergman from a six-part television series of roughly 294 minutes. The story unfolds in six chapters stretching across about ten years of the couple's relationship.
