Short description
A hurricane swells outside, but it's nothing compared to the storm within the hotel at Key Largo. There, sadistic mobster Johnny Rocco holes up - and holds at gunpoint hotel owner James Temple, his widowed daughter-in-law Nora, and ex-GI Frank McCloud.
What's left behind the scenes
- Director John Huston (1906-1987) did not tell Claire Trevor (1910-2000) that she would have to sing solo until the very day the scene was scheduled to be filmed. Trevor was not a professional singer and had not even rehearsed the song that day. Furthermore, she was shy, as she had to sing in front of A-list screen stars sitting directly opposite her. The result was an uncertain and nervous performance—exactly what the director wanted.
- The character of Johnny Rocco was based on Al Capone (1899-1947), who had moved to Florida and passed away there from syphilis-related complications a year before the film's release. Screenwriter Richard Brooks (1912-1992) later revealed that he also incorporated some traits of Lucky Luciano (1897-1962), another famous gangster, into Rocco's image.
