Hana, a university student living in the city, falls in love with a man who is a wolf in human form. They have two children together, Yuki and Ame, and the family keeps to itself to hide the children's dual nature. When the father dies suddenly, Hana decides the city can no longer hold them. She moves with Yuki and Ame to a remote rural area near a forest, where she raises them in a place far removed from their old life. There the siblings grow up, and their wolf heritage becomes something they must each reckon with as they get older, along with the question of which side of themselves to follow.
The film is directed by Mamoru Hosoda, who wrote the screenplay with Satoko Okudera. It followed Summer Wars in Hosoda's filmography and came before The Boy and the Beast. Aoi Miyazaki voices Hana, with Takao Osawa as the Wolf Man and Haru Kuroki and Yukito Nishii as the older Yuki and Ame; younger versions of the children are voiced by Momoka Ohno and Amon Kabe. It is an animated Japanese production running just under two hours.
The film performed well internationally, with a worldwide box office of about 55 million dollars. Audiences rate it highly, with an IMDb score of 8.1 from around 54,000 votes and a TMDB rating of 8.2 from roughly 2,500 votes.
