Short description

A teenage girl named Moana leaves her home on the island of Motunui to venture beyond the reef for the first time. Driven by a call from the ocean and a desire to bring prosperity back to her people, she teams up with a demigod named Maui. Together, they navigate the open sea, facing mythical creatures and various challenges to achieve their goal.

This adventure comedy was directed by Thomas Kail, following his work on Grease Live and Hamilton. The film features Catherine Lagaʻaia in the title role and Dwayne Johnson as Maui, with a supporting cast that includes Rena Owen, John Tui, Frankie Adams, and Jemaine Clement. Produced by Walt Disney Pictures alongside Seven Bucks Productions, Flynn Picture Company, and 5000 Broadway Productions, the project had a budget of 250 million USD and earned 322 million USD at the worldwide box office.

Audience reception is mixed across different platforms. On TMDB, the film holds a rating of 7.4/10 based on 712 votes, while on IMDb, it has a lower rating of 5.8/10 from 13,302 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Over 20 'magic' fishing hooks were created for filming, including a heavy-duty hook capable of supporting Dwayne Johnson's weight, a lightweight version for stunt scenes, and a cracked version with internal illumination.
  • About 150 variations of the ancient jade stone 'Heart of Te Fiti' were crafted from fluorite for the shoot. They were made in various shades of green to ensure they blended seamlessly with the color palette of specific scenes.
  • Moana was voiced by Auliʻi Cravalho in the animated films. She declined the offer to star in the live-action movie to make way for other voice actors.
  • Many copies of Moana's paddle were made for filming. The actual paddle proved too heavy for actress Catherine Lagaha'i, so it was replaced with replicas made from lightweight woods and fiberglass.
  • No hammers, nails, or other types of modern construction equipment were used when building the necessary props (such as huts or canoes). Instead, planks were lashed together using the traditional method—with coconut palm fibers.
