Leonard Fife, a Canadian-American documentary filmmaker long associated with leftist causes, has spent decades building a public reputation as a man of principle. Now elderly and seriously ill with cancer in Montreal, he agrees to sit for a final on-camera interview conducted by Malcolm, a former student of his. Fife's wife, Emma, is present as he speaks. What he intends is not another polished account of his career but a reckoning with the story he has told about himself, including his time as one of the many Americans who fled north to Canada to avoid service in Vietnam. The film follows the interview as Fife's memories of his younger self and his marriage press against the version of his life that others know.
Paul Schrader directed and wrote the screenplay, and the film is the twenty-first of the twenty-two features he has directed in chronological order, arriving after Master Gardener (2023) and before The Basics of Philosophy (2026). Richard Gere plays the older Fife, with Jacob Elordi as his younger self; Uma Thurman appears as Emma, Michael Imperioli as Malcolm, and Victoria Hill and Caroline Dhavernas round out the principal cast. The production, a collaboration between Israeli, Canadian and American companies, earned about 1 million USD worldwide.
Audience response has been modest: on IMDb the rating stands at 5.6 from roughly 3,000 votes, and on TMDB it is 5.7 from about 103 votes. A critics' rating of 6.2 from 106 reviews places professional assessment somewhat above those viewer scores.
