Short description
D2: The Mighty Ducks continues the story of Gordon Bombay, the former lawyer turned youth hockey coach. When an injury ends his playing comeback, he is asked to lead a United States junior team at the Junior Goodwill Games in Los Angeles. He brings back the young players he coached before and adds new talent from across the country, but the comforts of sudden attention and life in California distract both him and the team. With the tournament's dominant side from Iceland waiting, he has to refocus his players before they can compete.
Sam Weisman directed the film, his second feature after Mimi & Me, and Steven Brill wrote the screenplay. Emilio Estevez returns as Gordon Bombay, with Kathryn Erbe, Michael Tucker, Jan Rubeš, Carsten Norgaard and Joshua Jackson among the cast. It was produced by Walt Disney Pictures with Avnet/Kerner Productions and released in March 1994, taking about 46 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds 6.1/10 from around 46,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.2/10 from roughly 677 votes, showing a modest but enduring audience. A critics' rating of 4.2/10 from 15 reviews indicates critics were considerably less enthusiastic than viewers.
What's left behind the scenes
- The scene following the first game against the Icelandic national team, in which Emilio Estevez’s character makes his players run laps, reflects an incident with the 1980 US Olympic team coached by Herb Brooks, when the Americans drew with the Norwegian team. The team was skated for an hour, even though the lights in the arena were turned off.
- Maria Ellingsen, who played the coach of the Icelandic national team, was born in Reykjavik. She taught the actors who played the Icelandic hockey players the Icelandic language.
