Baby Boom

J.C. Wiatt is a driven New York executive whose life revolves around her job and her relationship with Steven, an investment broker who shares her disinterest in having children. Everything changes when a distant relative dies and names her guardian of the relative's baby girl, Elizabeth. The arrival of the child upends her routine, costs her the relationship and pushes her off the career path she had been pursuing, as a scheming colleague and an unsympathetic boss take advantage of her divided attention. She leaves the city for a house in the countryside, where she meets Jeff Cooper, a local veterinarian, and starts a small business of her own. The film follows her efforts to reconcile the professional life she built with the personal one she did not plan for.

Charles Shyer directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Nancy Meyers, who also produced; the film was the first he directed. Diane Keaton plays J.C., with Sam Shepard as Jeff, Harold Ramis as Steven, Sam Wanamaker as her employer Fritz Curtis, and twins Kristina and Michelle Kennedy as Elizabeth. Made for about 15 million dollars, it returned roughly 27 million worldwide.
