Jessica returns to her childhood home with her husband Max and his two daughters, hoping for a quiet life in the suburbs. Her youngest stepdaughter, Alice, finds an old stuffed bear named Chauncey in the basement and quickly becomes attached to it. The games Alice plays with Chauncey start out harmless but grow increasingly disturbing, and as her behaviour worsens, Jessica becomes convinced that the bear is not an ordinary toy.

The film is directed by Jeff Wadlow, who wrote the screenplay with Greg Erb and Bryce McGuire, and who also produced it with Jason Blum and Paul B. Uddo. It is Wadlow's eighth directed feature, following The Curse of Bridge Hollow and preceding The Devil's Mouth, and continues his work in horror after Truth or Dare and Fantasy Island. DeWanda Wise plays Jessica, with Taegen Burns as Taylor, Pyper Braun as Alice, Betty Buckley as Gloria, Tom Payne as Max, and Veronica Falcón as Dr. Alana Soto.

Made by Blumhouse Productions, Lionsgate and Tower of Babble Entertainment on a budget of 13 million dollars, the film took about 44 million dollars worldwide. Audience response was modest: it holds a rating of 4.8 on IMDb from around 20,000 votes and 5.9 on TMDB from roughly 721 votes, while the film critics' rating stands at 4.1 from 106 reviews.
