Short description
Struggling single father Jerry indoctrinates his son Joe into the sovereign citizen movement, teaching him that laws are mere illusions and freedom is something you take. But, as Jerry’s ideology consumes them, they are set on a collision course with a police chief who has spent his life upholding the rules that Jerry has spent his tearing down.
What's left behind the scenes
- The idea for the film was inspired by an event that took place in Arkansas on May 20, 2010, when two police officers chasing members of the Sovereign Citizen movement (an adult man and his underage son) were shot dead. The FBI views this informal social movement as a terrorist threat.
- One scene shows a truck ramming into the suspects' van. Michael K. Neill actually drove the truck into the van, thereby saving two officers who had been seriously wounded in a shootout with characters played by Nick Offerman and Jacob Tremblay. The truck is now part of an exhibit in a Washington museum.
