Short description

A struggling single father named Jerry convinces his son, Joe, that government laws are illusions and that true freedom must be taken. By indoctrinating the boy into the sovereign citizen movement, Jerry leads them both toward a confrontation with a police chief dedicated to upholding the legal system they reject. Set against the backdrop of the 2008 economic crisis, the story explores the rise of radical ideologies during difficult times.

The crime drama was written and directed by Christian Swegal. The film stars Nick Offerman as Jerry Kane, Jacob Tremblay as Joe Kane, and Dennis Quaid as John Bouchart, with a credited cast of 59 performers. It was produced by companies including All Night Diner, Rockhill Studios, Concourse Media, and Valecroft in the United States.

Released on July 11, 2025, the movie has a runtime of 100 minutes. It has received generally positive feedback from viewers, holding a 6.5 rating on IMDb based on 7,800 votes and a 6.6 rating on TMDB from 144 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The idea for the film was inspired by an event that took place in Arkansas on May 20, 2010, when two police officers chasing members of the Sovereign Citizen movement (an adult man and his underage son) were shot dead. The FBI views this informal social movement as a terrorist threat.
  • One scene shows a truck ramming into the suspects' van. Michael K. Neill actually drove the truck into the van, thereby saving two officers who had been seriously wounded in a shootout with characters played by Nick Offerman and Jacob Tremblay. The truck is now part of an exhibit in a Washington museum.
